David Beckham's proposed move to PSG has taken another step closer to becoming a reality with the French club allegedly ordering 20,000 shirts adorned with the superstar's name. The former England captain is approaching the end of his four-year stay in the MLS with LA Galaxy and has been heavily linked with a move back to Europe. It is understood that the Qatari-back Ligue 1 side are best placed to sign Beckham, who enjoys a strong working relationship with the club's director of football, Leonardo.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder will be a free agent in November, when he will be 36, but is keen to continue his playing career as he pursues a spot in Team GB's Olympic football team.
French radio station RTL claims the order was placed with Nike after a meeting with Beckham's advisors. However there has been no decision on what number the star will wear, with his preferred choices already occupied by summer signings - Jeremy Menez wears 7, and former Liverpool man Mohamed Sissoko 23.
A move to the French capital would be a major coup for domestic football in the country, something that has been invigorated by the injection of Middle East cash. However not everyone is excited by the prospect of seeing Beckham in Paris. UEFA chief Michel Platini launched a stinging attack on the player, claiming he is only good for shopping and that Paris St Germain should drop their interest in him.
He said: 'Beckham in Paris will certainly be good for shopping. I love this player but he is not the footballer he was. And if he comes to Paris now it will be to do something other than football.' Tottenham, who had Beckham training with them last winter, are keen to invite the England legend back while London rivals QPR have stated their desire to sign him too.
