Ghana begin search for third World Cup spot

Black Stars
Ghana's quest for a third successive FIFA World Cup finals appearance begins at home on Friday against Lesotho. It will also be the first major assignment for local man Kwesi Appiah who was promoted as assistant coach last month for the Brazil 2014 qualifiers.

Appiah, a former Ghana captain, has assembled a newly-look side missing the services of captain John Mensah, Asamoah Gyan, John Pantsil and Andre Ayew. But the Black Stars fall on revived Sulley Muntari-buoyed by a two-year AC Milan contract-for inspiration and has been appointed captain.

The 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists have won three test matches local second-tier sides with home-based stars Richard Kissi-Boateng and Richard Mpong impressing the technical team.

Ghana thumped Lesotho 3-0 during the 2010 combined Nations Cup/World Cup qualifier at the Essipong Stadium in Sekondi in October 2008. Anthony Annan, Sulley Muntari, John Boye and Harrison Afful are surviving members of the squad.

Lesotho are less fancied to cause an upset following report of a bonus row. In addition, they suffered a 3-0 defeat in a friendly against the Zebras of Botswana last Thursday at the University of Botswana Stadium. The Crocodiles are ranked 163 on the FIFA ranking. MTN Football
